Healthy food is no fun. Especially green food, those are the worst. I can’t think of one kid who would choose a healthy snack over homemade brownies. But we all know (because our Moms never stop telling us) that we have to eat our fruits and vegetables. So why not try to make eating healthy more fun? We are endlessly looking for snacks around here, and since all of our attempts at homemade crackers have failed, we had to get creative. When we saw some pictures of these critters, we thought it would be a perfect activity to make healthy bug snacks!
Make Healthy Food Fun!
There are so many options for these healthy bugs. We raided our refrigerator to see what kind of fruits and vegetables we had on hand.
We started by chopping up our celery and filling them with peanut butter. As with our silly sheep desserts, we did not want to add any toothpicks to our critters, as we wanted little kids to eat them up without any worry of picking out choking hazards.
The peanut butter worked well as our, “glue.” We even got fancy and put some into a pointed squeeze bottle. Although it helped with dabbing it on for the eyes, we found that it was difficult to get it out due to how thick our peanut butter was in the bottle. We ended up just using our fingers most of the time.
Getting Creative with Your Food Art:
All of us sat around the kitchen island and starting putting our healthy bugs together. Doesn’t this guy look like he is smiling?
Traveling with Healthy Bugs:
One thing that we need to mention is that we were bringing these to a large picnic to share with others. They were a bit difficult to travel with as they kept falling over! We originally thought we would put them on a platter, but then decided to lay them out in a narrow baking dish instead. This worked much better to hold them up.
These were a huge hit, even when lined up next to less than healthy options. Maybe healthy food can be fun.
