After our success at making silly dessert sheep, I think we got a little overconfident. We were looking for a unique Thanksgiving dessert idea that went beyond pie. I mean, we love pie and could eat it instead of turkey, potatoes, stuffing any year! But what if we could make a turkey that we really wanted to eat? One covered in sugar and candy? Now, that is my type of turkey! After spending some time looking at fun examples, I was confident that I could come up with my own turkey-shaped Thanksgiving dessert that would be fantastic. What is the worst that could happen?
Collecting Ingredients For My Turkey-Shaped Dessert:
The thing I really liked about our sheep dessert was that they stuck together with the marshmallow “glue.” Just like our healthy bugs, we did not have to use any toothpicks that might accidentally hurt those who wanted to devour them without taking the time to dissect the animals. So I decided to a variation of this idea with using rice cereal and marshmallows as my main ingredient.
Let the Experiment Begin!
My idea was to have a turkey head and have pretzels sticking out in a semi-circle with candy corn on the tips to make it look like feathers. Reading that now, I feel like this was doomed from the beginning, but you never know.
My first problem came with attaching the candy corn to the pretzels. I thought that I would just melt some white chocolate and glue them on. When that did not work, I got crafty and started to do a bit of carving. I cut out a little ledge on the back for the pretzel to attach.
My problem was solved. They looked to be holding!
Making the Cereal Base:
Up next, I followed the traditional Rice-Krispies recipe and allowed the batch to cool a bit.
After it was safe to handle, I dug in. Interesting, this was a lot stickier than when I did this with Cheerios.
No worries, I just let it cool even longer and worked on my “feathers.” When I got too impatient, I just grabbed a spoonful of the cereal mixture and started forming it into a ball. Then, I stuck my pretzels into the top.
Yikes. Right away they were already dropping and falling off. Next plan, lay it down flat and see if that helps.
After I managed to get all of the feathers semi-attached, I began working on the face. I dipped the white chocolate into a bit of melted chocolate and stuck them on. And then I shoved the candy corn in as the beak.
I don’t know about you, but this does not look like a turkey.
Other Options for Thanksgiving Themed Desserts:
Still, there was no need to panic. I thought I might skip the pretzels and just add candy corn. Something is just not quite right with this turkey.
I still did not want to give up, so I thought back to this idea of making turkey legs with Rice-Krispies treats. Even though I did not have larger pretzel sticks, I got creative with the supplies I had. I thought this one worked out pretty well!
Forget Thanksgiving:
At this point, my sister and I just got silly. I already knew this was going in the “Oops” category, so we just started creating all sorts of animals. Of course, my sister had to try a bunny. I think she should stick to her other options.
In the end, all of our creations just made us giggle. We had fun playing with our food, and we had no problems eating them. Even if they were a turkey-shaped Thanksgiving dessert fail.
