How to Make Easy Fall Pumpkin Donuts for Kids

Donuts. They seem like such a mystery to make. I think it is because we so rarely have them. The only time we get donuts is when we are on a road trip, and Mom wants to stop for coffee or when we go apple picking and get warm apple cider donuts. Since we had so many apples this season from our own trees, we did not get our fall donuts! So we decided to try to make pumpkin donuts for kids everywhere who want more donuts.

$30 Dollar Donuts:

The last time we were on a family trip, we were at a tourist destination, and they were selling warm donuts. Of course, we begged, and Dad went to investigate. He came back shaking his head no. They were $30 for six donuts. Are donuts that hard to make? This became our family joke whenever we saw something we thought was way overpriced.

Kids Can Easily Make Pumpkin Donuts:

After making these, I keep wondering why we have not made donuts before. We have made donuts for our bunny, but not for us. The only thing that we needed to purchase were donut molds. We decided on these because we liked the bright colors and they seemed like they would be easier to pop out the donuts.

Our eggs were smiling at us! I think they were happy to be a part of a donut.

While I was preparing my ingredients, I read 1 and 1/2 cups of baking powder. I thought that was a little bit curious, but what do I know? The problem is that I knew I did not have that much. So I called Mom to tell her we were off to the grocery store for the tenth time this week. With hesitation, I mentioned the amount while she shook her head no. It is a good thing we ended up checking this out. It turns out that this was a typo. We just added our Thanksgiving turkey dessert to the Oops category, and that much baking powder would have guaranteed another fail.

But beyond that hiccup, this was such an easy recipe! You do not even need to use a mixer. We started with all of the ingredients except flour.

The last time I used pumpkin was for Lola’s birthday dog treats, and I thought the canned pumpkin grossed me out because I had dog food on my mind. It turns out, that stuff just smells yucky even when you are making donuts!

Filling The Donut Molds:

After mixing it all together, we got to the hard part. How should we get the batter into the donut molds? We read online that people use frosting piping methods, but that just seemed like more work than necessary. We ended up using a measuring cup and making a complete mess.

Then we went back to try and clean them up a bit.

Just as we had hoped, they popped right out of the silicone molds. The shape was, well, interesting.

Holy Muffins?

They look a bit more like muffins with a hole in them. Maybe we should call them, “holy muffins?”

Once we flipped them upside down, however, they looked more like donuts. We eagerly brushed on the melted butter and dropped them into the bag of sugar and cinnamon.

We did it! Although we titled these pumpkin donuts for kids, Mom immediately made a decaf and ate one. Then Dad came along and swallowed down a few. I guess it is time to make more for us kids!
